Description:
The purpose of the Institute is to exercise the powers of the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands in matters of agri-food quality.

The Institute will also act as a service provider for the control and certification of the quality of agri-food products.

For the development of the aforementioned purpose, the Institute is entrusted with the exercise of the promotion, encouragement, protection and control of agri-food quality, including the sanctioning powers inherent to the same and, in particular, the following:

  • To make proposals for general provisions on agri-food quality.
  • To apply European, national and regional regulations on agri-food quality and ensure compliance with them.
  • Promote agricultural and agri-food products originating in the Canary Islands.
  • Promote research applied to agri-food quality.
  • To carry out the control of pesticide residues in agri-food products, adopting intervention and sanction measures, if necessary.
  • To issue a favourable decision on the recognition of designations of origin and protected indications, guaranteed traditional specialities of agri-food products, including salt and cochineal, the recognition of geographical indications for aromatised wine products and geographical indications for spirituous beverages. It is also responsible for proposing the revocation of such recognition, as well as promoting the recognition of those that it considers to be of general interest to the Autonomous Community".
  • To safeguard the actions of the management bodies of protected designations of origin and indications of origin and other geographical indications or quality indications for agri-food products, including salt and cochineal".
  • To ensure the prestige of protected designations of origin and indications of origin and other geographical indications or quality indications for agri-food products, including salt and cochineal, and to prosecute their misuse.
  • To exercise the public functions inherent to integrated production systems and organic farming and livestock farming.
  • Act as inspection bodies for protected designations of origin and indications of origin and other geographical indications or quality terms for agri-food products, including salt and cochineal.
  • To guide, supervise and coordinate the production, preparation and processing of agri-food products, including salt and cochineal, covered by designations of origin and protected indications or other geographical indications or quality mentions.
  • Promote and participate directly in specific operations for the development of quality figures, provided that there are circumstances of territorial or strategic interest that make this advisable, insufficient participation of economic agents and the need to structure a productive area linked to the agricultural sector.
  • To carry out control and certification activities for agri-food products, including salt and cochineal, covered by designations of origin and protected indications or other geographical indications or quality mentions".
  • To make proposals to the Government of the Canary Islands on matters related to agri-food quality and especially on training.
  • Encourage collaboration between the different public administrations on issues related to agri-food quality and safety.
  • Any other function related to its purposes that may be entrusted to it.
