Description:

The Asociación de Criadores de Cabras de Raza Palmera is an association based on the island of La Palma whose main aims are:

  • To watch over the purity and selection of the Palmera breed of goat, breeding this breed according to the customs and traditions of the island of La Palma, complying with animal welfare regulations and respect for the environment.
  • To promote the dissemination of knowledge about the Palmera goat breed and its production.
  • To provide technical assistance to its partners.

We currently have 56 active stud farms, all on the island of La Palma, and a total of 7450 animals registered in the breed's Stud Book.

The Palmera goat is a very old breed that originated on the island of La Palma and for centuries has been one of the pillars of the island's economy. It is currently officially recognised as a Special Protection Autochthonous Breed, is mainly located on La Palma and has a very traditional breeding system of grazing.

It is one of the breeds worldwide with the greatest potential for the production of artisan cheeses. Given the exceptional quality of its milk, with the best protein percentage known among dairy goat breeds, and a very good level of fat, it could be considered the ideal animal for any farmer interested in semi-extensive farming, using local forage resources in non-agricultural areas, with production focused on making cheese or any other dairy product to satisfy the demand for local consumption of top quality products.
